  • A student who is nervous about putting their face in the water and is signed up for group lessons this summer (Our focus will be understanding how to safely hold a breath and go under and helping the student feel empowered to practice this skill independently)

  • A parent who wants to be involved in their child’s (6+ months) swim education and understands that this can be a lengthy process (Our focus will be age appropriate skills to practice daily with your child to encourage early safety, swimming and understanding of the water)

  • An adult who can swim but isn’t totally comfortable if they can’t touch the bottom, an adult who is very comfortable but wants to refine their strokes for exercise, an adult who is terrified of water but want to try. (Our focus will be comfort, safety and understanding how the water works)

Levels of Learning

(Private 30 minute lessons)

Introductory

An introduction to the water for swimmers of all ages. All students under 3 will be accompanied by a parent or caretaker who will be the primary “holder.” Recommended for over 12 mos. Students will learn basic water skills with a large focus on breath. Students will learn how to submerge holding breath and how to submerge blowing bubbles. Submersions are never forced and are only assisted with the student’s permission (if the student is not yet verbal close attention is paid to signs of comfort and understanding). Students will be introduced to proper body positioning for floating (front and back). Parental or caretaker involvement is essential and for optimum learning students should practice daily (this practice can be done in a bathtub with parental guidance and will only take a few minutes each day). If a student starts very young they may be at the introductory level for many months. This is how we learn to relate to the water in a safe and respectful way. I am always happy to discuss individual timelines and goals and I encourage parents to feel empowered to work with their own children at this stage. Upon completion the student is ready for independent swimming.

Please note this is NOT an ISR class and your baby may NOT learn independent floating until the next stage (each human has a unique specific gravity, the younger the student the harder time they will have balancing their center of mass and center of buoyancy). While very young students CAN and DO learn to float over time, this is a skill that requires great relaxation and should not be rushed. It is unfortunately impossible to make a survival skill an automatic response at any age. Even if your young child can perform a self rescue please keep them within arms reach at all times. I’m always happy to discuss safety and best practices around the pool.

Beginner

A beginner swimmer knows how to go underwater safely, they can blow bubbles or hold breath. The goals for this level are to have a deeper understanding of working with the water. We learn kicks and arm strokes with an emphasis on what feels effective and what feels comfortable for each child. The goal of this level is to be able to move toward a goal (steps or the side of the pool), comfortably take a breath en route and recover and continue swimming. Upon completion a student will understand how to position their body for floating on tummy and back, how to dive deep if needed and how to resurface and swim. The goals are comfort, safety and fun. Upon completion the student is ready for stroke work.

Intermediate

An intermediate swimmer is comfortable, understands safety and is ready to learn “the proper way to swim.” Swimmers will learn freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. Emphasis will be on proper form and timing, students will gain an understanding of hydrodynamics and how to move efficiently in the water. Upon completion swimmers will be ready for more refinement and advanced skills.

Advanced

An advanced swimmer knows a total of 6 strokes (freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, sidestroke and elementary backstroke) and can demonstrate them with proper form. Upon completion of this level a student will have had the opportunity to learn flip turns, diving and survival swimming (I can work with them fully clothed for one segment if desired to go over survival situations). Student will be ready to train for swim team, play water polo or work with a competitive coach. I do NOT teach competition level technique and am more teacher than coach.

  • I live in Atwater Village and there will be no additional travel fee for lessons booked within 5 miles of my home. Travel exceeding 5 miles each way will be charged at $.55/mile. This is a PER TRIP fee and does not change with number of swimmers.

  • All lessons are one on one (students under 3 will initially be accompanied by a parent or caretaker)

  • Lessons typically run 30 minutes (please allow a few minutes after for drying off)

  • I prefer new clients book ONE assessment lesson first (This can be a regularly priced 30 minute lesson OR a regularly priced 60 minute consultation). This lets me see what the student knows already and what their strengths and anxieties are. After the assessment lesson I’ll be able to discuss individual process, expected pace of learning and expectations and then propose a schedule.
